Bachelors is Social Work (BSW) is a purely an academic degree offered by purbanchal University though its constituents campus Janata Adarsha Multiple Campus in Biratnagar. It is one of the pionner institution to offer BSW degree in Koshi provience and has established its landmark in the field of Social Work academic and profession.
The program is designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to become competent and ethical social work practitioners. Spanning eight semesters and totaling 120 credits, this comprehensive curriculum integrates theoretical study with practical application, ensuring graduates are well-prepared to address the complex challenges of contemporary social work practice.
In the foundational courses, students delve into the history and philosophy of social work, gaining insight into the evolution of social welfare systems and the underlying principles that guide the profession. They explore sociological concepts essential for understanding human behavior within social contexts and examine theories of human growth and behavior, laying the groundwork for understanding individual and collective development.
Language proficiency is honed through academic English and Nepali language and literature courses, enabling effective communication in diverse settings. Additionally, students develop critical thinking and communication skills through courses in communication for development, essential for engaging with communities and advocating for social change.
This program provides practical frameworks for intervention, emphasizing the importance of client-centered approaches and collaborative strategies. The inclusion of courses on psychiatric social work and mental health ensures students are equipped to address the complex psychosocial needs of individuals and communities.
Integral to the program are fieldwork practicum experiences, offering students the opportunity to apply classroom learning in real-world settings. These practicums provide invaluable hands-on experience under the guidance of experienced practitioners, allowing students to integrate theory with practice and develop their professional skills.
As students progress through the program, they engage with advanced topics such as social policy and welfare administration, human rights, international social work, and social work research. These courses deepen students' understanding of the social, political, and cultural factors that shape social work practice, empowering them to navigate complex systems and advocate for social justice on local, national, and global levels.
Upon completion of the BSW program, graduates emerge as competent, compassionate, and culturally competent social work professionals, ready to make a meaningful impact in diverse communities and promote positive social change.
Admission requirements/ Pre –requisites
To be eligible for admission to the deg ree of Bachelor of Social Work, candidates shall comply with the General Educational Regulations of Purbanchal University. For entry into Bachelors Programme, completion of 10+2 (from any streams)/'A' Level or equivalent with 40% marks or equivalent grade is necessary.
The selection of BSW will be based on Entrance Examination, Performance in group Discussion, and Personal Interview. Additional preferences will be given to those students who achieved academic excellence in their past studies, represented national sports and arts and demonstrate leadership in extracurricular activities. Also students from remote, lower caste and ethnic communities will be given special concessions according to the rules of government.
However, final decision of admission remains with the management committee.

Employment Opportunities for Graduates Graduates Social Work specialization will have opportunities of work employments on academic, research and NGOs, INGOs and other service delivery organizations. The graduates can also be involved in providing consultancy services, policy inputs at various levels of decision making within government agencies, advocacy work for the disadvantaged sections and documentation of development activities. Teaching Social Work Field Practicum and Skill lab
The BSW Programme with focuses on Generic Social Work education provides students the opportunity to explore development issues from perspective of social work. The Programme consists of Classroom instruction, comprising lectures, Discussions, student preparations and seminar sessions and role play with subject matter specialists, field placement with social organizations and government agencies in Urban, Rural and Hill areas.
Use of Innovative learning enriches the program. Student undergo Concurrent or Block Field Work equivalent of fifteen hours in a week. In addition to field practicum rural camp, urban camp, study tour and field based assignment provides opportunities to develop reflective analytic, interpretive and practical skills required to learn action strategies.
